CCMA Announces Halifax As Host of Country Music Week & 2015 CCMA Awards

Halifax, NS, February 11, 2013 – The Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) announced today that Halifax, Nova Scotia has been selected to host Country Music Week and the Canadian Country Music Association Awards™ in 2015. This will mark the first time that Halifax has hosted country music’s biggest week since 1982.

Today’s announcement was made in Halifax by the President of the CCMA, Don Green, who spoke highly of the city’s successful bid. “We are very excited to be going to Halifax in 2015 for the first time in over 30 years,” said Green. “Canada’s east coast is rich with musical talent and with their track record of executing world class events with a unique eastern flavor, this event will certainly be a can’t miss for fans and industry alike!”

“Nova Scotia is proud to host one of the biggest music events in the country. Music not only makes our lives more interesting, it provides jobs and economic opportunities as part of the creative economy,” said Economic and Rural Development and Tourism Minister Percy Paris. “Major events like Country Music Week and the CCMA Awards help grow our economy, attract more visitors and help build Nova Scotia's $2.0-billion tourism industry.”

“Being selected to host the Country Music Week and the Awards underscores the diversity and dynamism of the music that we make in Halifax, as well as our growing reputation for being a great host city. I’m delighted to welcome the Canadian country music stars and their many fans from across the country, and I look forward to a lively week in September, 2015. We’re very excited,” Mayor Savage said.

Country Music Week Halifax will be held September 10-13, 2015 with the CCMA Awards being held on Sunday, September 13. Before heading to the coast, the CCMA invites everyone to join them in Edmonton, Alberta for Country Music Week 2013/2014, held September 5-8 in 2013 and September 4-7 in 2014. Winter On-Street Parking Ban
is expected to come into effect on
Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013

Regardless of weather conditions, expect a parking ticking in the morning if you park on the street in St. John's this Winter... Except for downtown, they can park on the street even during the worst of storms, impeding snow clearing at the moment it falls, and then all residents have to wait for days, if not weeks, for the streets downtown to be properly cleared... What's your thoughts? Is this really necessary especially when there is no snow to be found!

Motorists in the City of St. John's are advised that the On-Street Parking Ban for streets outside the designated "Downtown" area will come into effect on 12:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2012 and will remain in effect until further notice.

The hours during which on-street parking is prohibited are 12:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. daily. Tickets will be issued to vehicles parked in violation of the On-Street Parking Ban continuously throughout the winter season, regardless of weather or street conditions. This action is necessary to avoid interference with snow clearing operations in the event of an unexpected snow storm or drifting condition. The fine for violators is $45. (based on 2012 rates)

Motorists are reminded that vehicles impeding snow clearing operations at any time during scheduled removals or during regular snow clearing operations are subject to towing and impounding.
Towing Charge: At contracted cost (currently $141.25)
Impounding Fee: $3 per day (based on 2012 rates)

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - New Year's Eve at Raymonds restaurant in St. John's, N.L., will feature a luxurious 12-course tasting menu of seafood and wild game crafted by celebrated chef Jeremy Charles.

Each dish is based on a walk-in-the-woods theme and will showcase flavours from throughout the island, paired with wines from around the world.

The price?

A bell-ringing $325 per person, including the wine, tax and tip.

A more typical dinner for two at Raymonds — think cornish hen with foie gras jus or pan roasted cod with Jerusalem artichoke puree — will top $300 with appetizer and dessert, depending on which wine you choose from a 42-page list. Bottles range from about $40 to more than $2,000.

It's still a surprise to many people from out of town that fine dining of this calibre not only exists but thrives on the Rock. And while Raymonds is the jewel in this city's culinary crown, it's in fine company with a growing list of restaurants that increasingly delights globe-trotting food lovers.

The offshore oil boom has brought new visitors, executives and wealth to a province famous for its kitchen parties and culture of hospitality.

"Europe, Scandinavia, Japan. People are coming up from all over," said Charles, a soft-spoken and unassuming wizard in chef's whites.

Raymonds, named for his grandfather and the father of restaurant manager and sommelier Jeremy Bonia, was chosen Canada's best new restaurant last year by Air Canada's enRoute inflight magazine.

"I think we take a fairly simple approach with ingredients," Charles said. "We try to forage and source all local Newfoundland ingredients and, if not, Canadian."

Those basic elements include the freshest seafood, moose, rabbit, duck and lamb — grazed in summer on salt grass islands in the North Atlantic — that he infuses with French, Italian or whatever modern twists inspire him.

Charles refined many of those techniques during the decade he spent away, cooking for the Molson and Bronfman families at a remote fly fishing camp in Quebec, and working as a private chef in Chicago and Los Angeles.

"Not everyone's expecting to see such food, I guess, in St. John's. But it's great to be a part of this whole food movement and I think we really have come a long way in the past few years," he said.

"A lot of people are pushing themselves to put out wonderful products and we're so proud of what we have here. We're so excited to share what we have with the rest of Canada and the world."

St. John's-based food writer and critic Karl Wells said Raymonds is worth every dollar for those who can afford it, and it seems there are many who can. Reservations in high season are recommended weeks in advance.

"It wasn't that long ago that I wrote a column being critical of a particular restaurant here that was charging $40 for an entree. Well, I mean, that sounds kind of silly now," Wells said.

Word is spreading about the quality and quantity of Newfoundland eateries, in a range of prices and tastes from Mexican to Indian to the Japanese fusion of Basho Restaurant and Lounge.

The excellence of down-home pub food has been honoured too. The Duke of Duckworth in St. John's, best known for its fish and chips and its recurring role on the hit CBC-TV show "Republic of Doyle," was ranked 10th on this year's Vacay.ca list of Canada's top 50 restaurants.

And there's no shortage of places to find modern twists on traditional favourites such as Jiggs dinner (boiled salt beef with carrot, cabbage, turnip, pease pudding and potato), figgy duff raisin pudding and desserts made with indigenous blueberries, partridge berries and bakeapples.

Award-winning creations also abound at the Newfoundland Chocolate Company.

Wells traces the local food revolution in part to the rise of celebrity chefs and their myriad cooking shows. That media-driven foodie craze has generated a wave of new and ambitious chefs now making their mark in culinary competitions and at the helms of their own restaurants.

Wells laughed as he recalled arriving in Vancouver four years ago as a judge for the Gold Medal Plates national championships. It was tough to convince some people that Newfoundland has more to offer than fried foods and fish and chips, he said.

"It's not that way anymore. Two years ago, Jeremy Charles was our gold medalist here and he went out and won the silver medal nationally. He damn near won the gold, and that really made a huge difference."

Wells credits long-standing St. John's restaurants such as Bianca's and The Cellar, where many chefs got their start, for first pushing the boundaries of fine dining. Easier flight access to London and New York City, along with the popularity of international cruises, has influenced the appetites of many Newfoundlanders, he said.

That growing demand for good food has made it easier to get fresh micro greens, herbs and other ingredients, said chef Mike Gillan of the recently opened St. John's restaurant Saltwater.

"I think overall the experience of eating has changed. People did it at one time strictly for nourishment and now they really go for it for entertainment. That's where we become as much performers as we are chefs."

Dave Snow, president of Wildland Tours, said some of the best food is found outside St. John's. He has offered snow crab feasts in season at Battle Harbour in Labrador, and raves about Nellie Cunningham's fresh breads and pies, available May to October, at the Clode Sound Motel and Restaurant in Charlottetown, N.L.

"You don't see as much wealth out there," Snow said. "But rural Newfoundland is where our heart and soul come from, for a lot of us anyway."

Rig: A Play commemorates the thirtieth anniversary of the Ocean Ranger disaster when, on February 15, 1982, the oil rig sank in the North Atlantic off the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, claiming the lives of all eighty-four men who were aboard the structure.
Playwright Joan Sullivan has produced a one-hour script by adapting Mike Heffernan's excellent two hundred-page book Rig: An Oral History of the Ocean Ranger Disaster, based on interviews with family members of rig workers, workers who were not aboard the Ocean Ranger the night it went down, and those connected with the rescue efforts and the aftermath of the tragic events thirty years ago (Heffernan's cousin was one of the workers).

Hair Is An Extension Of The Nervous System
Why Indians Keep Their Hair Long

This information about hair has been hidden from the public since the Viet Nam War .

Our culture leads people to believe that hair style is a matter of personal preference, that hair style is a matter of fashion and/or convenience, and that how people wear their hair is simply a cosmetic issue. Back in the Viet Nam war however, an entirely different picture emerged, one that has been carefully covered up and hidden from public view.

In the early nineties, Sally [name changed to protect privacy] was married to a licensed psychologist who worked at a VA Medical hospital. He worked with combat veterans with PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. Most of them had served in Viet Nam.

Sally said, "I remember clearly an evening when my husband came back to our apartment on Doctor's Circle carrying a thick official looking folder in his hands. Inside were hundreds of pages of certain studies commissioned by the government. He was in shock from the contents. What he read in those documents completely changed his life. From that moment on my conservative middle of the road husband grew his hair and beard and never cut them again. What is more, the VA Medical center let him do it, and other very conservative men in the staff followed his example. As I read the documents, I learned why.

It seems that during the Viet Nam War special forces in the war department had sent undercover experts to comb American Indian Reservations looking for talented scouts, for tough young men trained to move stealthily through rough terrain. They were especially looking for men with outstanding, almost supernatural, tracking abilities. Before being approached, these carefully selected men were extensively documented as experts in tracking and survival.

With the usual enticements, the well proven smooth phrases used to enroll new recruits, some of these indian trackers were then enlisted. Once enlisted, an amazing thing happened. Whatever talents and skills they had possessed on the reservation seemed to mysteriously disappear, as recruit after recruit failed to perform as expected in the field.

Serious causalities and failures of performance led the government to contract expensive testing of these recruits, and this is what was found.

When questioned about their failure to perform as expected, the older recruits replied consistently that when they received their required military haircuts, they could no longer 'sense' the enemy, they could no longer access a 'sixth sense' , their 'intuition' no longer was reliable, they could''t 'read' subtle signs as well or access subtle extrasensory information.

So the testing institute recruited more indian trackers, let them keep their long hair, and tested them in multiple areas. Then they would pair two men together who had received the same scores on all the tests. They would let one man in the pair keep his hair long, and gave the other man a military haircut. Then the two men retook the tests.

Time after time the man with long hair kept making high scores. Time after time, the man with the short hair failed the tests in which he had previously scored high scores.

Here is a typical test:

The recruit is sleeping out in the woods. An armed 'enemy' approaches the sleeping man. The long haired man is awakened out of his sleep by a strong sense of danger and gets away long before the enemy is close, long before any sounds from the approaching enemy are audible.

In another version of this test the long haired man senses an approach and somehow intuits that the enemy will perform a physical attack. He follows his 'sixth sense' and stays still, pretending to be sleeping, but quickly grabs the attacker and 'kills' him as the attacker reaches down to strangle him.

This same man, after having passed these and other tests, then received a military haircut and consistantly failed these tests, and many other tests that he had previously passed.

So, the document recommended that all Indian trackers be exempt from military haircuts. In fact, it required that trackers keep their hair long."

Comment

The mammalian body has evolved over millions of years. Survival skills of human and animal at times seem almost supernatural. Science is constantly coming up with more discoveries about the amazing abilities of man and animal to survive. Each part of the body has highly sensitive work to perform for the survival and well being of the body as a whole. The body has a reason for every part of itself.

Hair is an extension of the nervous system, it can be correctly seen as exteriorized nerves, a type of highly-evolved 'feelers' or 'antennae' that transmit vast amounts of important information to the brainstem, the limbic system, and the neocortex.

Not only does hair in people, including facial hair in men, provide an information highway reaching the brain, hair also emits energy, the electromagnetic energy emitted by the brain into the outer environment. This has been seen in Kirlian photography when a person is photographed with long hair and then rephotographed after the hair is cut.

When hair is cut, receiving and sending transmissions to and from the environment are greatly hampered. This results in 'numbing-out'.

Cutting of hair is a contributing factor to unawareness of environmental distress in local ecosystems. It is also a contributing factor to insensitivity in relationships of all kinds. It contributes to sexual frustration.

Conclusion

In searching for solutions for the distress in our world, it may be time for us to consider that many of our most basic assumptions about reality are in error. It may be that a major part of the solution is looking at us in the face each morning when we see ourselves in the mirror.

Clinging on for dear life to the side of a vertical cliff, the tiny lion cub cries out pitifully for help.

His mother arrives at the edge of the precipice with three other lionesses and a male. The females start to clamber down together but turn back daunted by the sheer drop.

Eventually, one single factor determines which of them will risk her life to save the youngster - motherly love.

The drama begins: The mother arrives at the edge of the cliff as her son cries out for rescue after being trapped when he slipped

On the brink: Four lionesses look over the edge before aborting their rescue mission because of the sheer drop.

Slowly, agonizingly, the mother cat edges her way down towards her terrified cub.

One slip from her and both animals could end up dead at the bottom of the ravine.

Just as the exhausted cub seems about to fall,
his mother circles beneath him and he is snatched up in her jaws.

She then begins the equally perilous journey back to the top.

The dramatic rescue, captured by wildlife photographer Jean-Francois Largot,
was played out in Kenya's Masai Mara game reserve.

Despite the presence of wardens to deter poachers,
day-to-day life for the lions is not without its dangers,
as the cub learned the hard way.

The mother gives her cub a lick to say that all is well.
